Yakdessagala Pirivena, Seruwawa, Talwita (Kurunegala District) |
It is a place that needs assistance and the DVF is ready to liaise with prospective donors. The most essential items are proper toilets and a well ventilated kitchen cum dana sala.
Yakdessagala Pirivena could be reached by taking the turn to Hiripitiya Road on the Kurunegala-Dambulla Road and again turning left passing the Petrol Station in Wellawa. The Pirivena is situated at the foot of Yakdessa Rock. We were informed that the rock acquired this name because according to tradition Queen Kuveni was residing there and was pushed down to her death.
The pirivena is new and provides education to 34 samaeras. The Pirivena lacks the basic facilities and on a general appeal received by the DVF it was decided to provide the young monks with mattresses. On the first occasion 15 folding mattresses were provided at a cost of Rs. 30,000/-. The major potion was funded by a donation received from Mrs. Hewavissenti, an associate member of the DVF. The Pirivena was visited for the first time on 27 September 2010 by the President of DVF and three other trustees. Conditions were so poor that the DVF decided to supply 15 additional mattresses and 35 each of stainless steel cups and plates for the use of the samanera monks.
The place was visited again on 24 December 2010 to hand over the stainless steel plates and cups that were purchased at a cost of Rs 9100/- and a cheque for Rs. 51,941.25 to purchase 15 regular mattresses from ARPICO, Kurunegala.
