Brighten the life of a needy child -
An Appeal to Sri Lankans living abroad

Needy children requesting financial assistance from the DVF have increased in unprecedented numbers. Although they have the benefit of free education, free text books and free material for school uniforms (all provided by the State), the family income of a considerably large number of school children is insufficient to provide other basic essentials such as food and health needs. A hand to month existence is a common experience of a large segment of our country particularly in the rural sector and among the low income groups in the urban sector. There is consequently a high incidence of malnutrition among our children according to reports of the Ministry of Health. As you are aware a high premium is given to education by most people in this country for being a path to advancement not only in knowledge but also in economic and social standing.

Children who aspire to progress on this path despite their draw backs find themselves are caught in a dilemma, although they have gained admission to higher echelons of education, i.e. medical, engineering, law and other faculties in universities, and to technical colleges. DVF is one of the organizations to which children in need turn to get assistance. But the available funds have been almost exhausted due to the unprecedented number of requests which are found to be justifiable and equally pathetic.

We appeal to you for a generous donation towards enhancing DVF capacity to meet the ever-increasing demand for assistance. A medical student could be helped with less than 30 dollars a month. A student in any of the other faculties would need around 20 dollars a month. An advanced level student could be helped with fifteen dollars a month and a needy grade 5 scholar would need around ten dollars. In terms of your earnings and expenses the said amounts would be a mere sacrifice of an ice cream, a perfume or a take away food or drink.

You may perhaps have had the benefit of free education and free health services when you were in this country. It is likely that your conscience may remind you of your debt to the up and coming generations of this land. It is the vision of DVF to look upon them as our own, our wealth. Our late patron the Most Ven. Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera, with his farsightedness, always spoke of the need to develop the country along with the moral advancement of society.

The year 2011 marks the 2600th year since the enlightenment of the Buddha, that bench marked the height of possible human excellence, and super human insight. The time is most opportune for any kind gesture that may result in the advancement of the younger generation of the motherland.

The selection of the most deserving and the monitoring of the utilization and progress of the selectee will be done by the DVF. Regular reports could be sent if it is a sponsorship.
